About Pio Cesare
Founded in 1881 and run since then by five generations of the family. This is traditional Piemonte producer making wine from ancient cellars in the heart of the old town of Alba. Pio Cesare is amongst the most historic wineries in Piemonte, and also one of the largest, with 75ha of vines across Barolo and Barbaresco.
Five generations of the family have been producing traditional Piemontese wines in ancient cellars. The growers have supplied to the family since their early years ensuring the consistently high quality of their Barolo and Barbaresco.
Pio Cesare is amongst the most historic wineries in Piedmont. Their long history of creating age-worthy, classic bottlings has made them “a "lighthouse" winery” in the words of the Wine Advocate, and it is hard to imagine a more steadfast producer within this most famous of Italian regions.

Wine Advocate (95)Pio Cesare does a great job with its classic 2019 Barolo (in production since 1881). The bottom of the front label reads "Barolo Pio" in memory of the legendary Pio Boffa. He was a wine entrepreneur who gained the immediate respect and love of all those who knew him. He passed away tragically during the COVID-19 pandemic just as the vaccines were being rolled out. This is a large production of about 70,000 bottles with fruit sourced from across seven vineyards in five villages. Despite those ambitious numbers, the wine remains strictly focused on bright Nebbiolo fruit with red cassis and aniseed. The finish is smooth with tannins that elegantly dissolve over the palate. |

Vinous (96+)The 2010 Barolo Ornato is quite possibly the best wine I have ever tasted from Pio Cesare's hillside site in Serralunga. Exotic, beguiling and constantly changing in the glass, the 2010 Ornato races across the palate with compelling nuance, brightness and energy. Red stone fruits, crushed rocks, orange peel, spices and white pepper all blossom from the glass in an exotic Barolo full of allure. James Suckling (98)The aromas are so complex yet subtle wtih wet earth, mushrooms and dark fruits. Dried flowers as well. Full body, chewy tannins that are ultra-fine and powerful, yet there is a finesse and beauty to them as I said from barrel. Classic, great nebbiolo. Try in 2023. |
