About Domaine Hudelot-Noellat
The legendary Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat is currently under the magnetic leadership of Charles Van Canneyt, grandson of founder Alain Hudëlot-Noellat.
One of the truly great names of Burgundy, Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat can trace its founding back to the (relatively) recent marriage of Alain Hudelot and Odile Noëllat in 1964. Combining not just their surnames, but their ancestral vineyard holdings also, one of the great producers of the vinous world was born quite romantically.
The Winemaker
Charles Van Canneyt is a dynamically young winemaker in the region, hailed as something of a prodigy ever since he took up the mantel of his family estate from his grandfather Alain. Having completed his formal training at Dijon University, Charles began to assist at Hudelot-Noëllat for a number of years alongside the watchful and diligent consultant Vincent Meunier, who very much remains the family’s lieutenant, before taking over in 2008.
The Vineyards
One would be hard-pressed to imagine a better Domaine to inherit. Naturally, names such as DRC and Rousseau may rightly come to mind, but Hudelot-Noëllat is every bit as desirable a birthright. A five-hectare parcel of some of the finest Grands Crus in Vosne-Romanée represents the pinnacle of Van Canneyt’s holdings – chief amongst which is his Richebourg and Romanée-St-Vivant.

Decanter (91)
Blended from a patchwork of 18 different plots, all opposite either Chambolle-Musigny or Gilly-lès-Cîteaux. This shows a bright red berry fruit character, with floral notes, light body and a silky texture. The fruit is destemmed and fermented on native yeasts, before ageing 16 months in used casks.د.إ1,310.00 -

In bottle. A cherry to crimson colour. Fine, pleasing, stylish cherry fruit on the nose, cherry to raspberry on the palate, a little tannin to help the structure, but essentially on the fruit, pure and classy. Drink from 2025-2028.د.إ1,305.00 -
Burghound (89-91)
(from 11 different parcels in 7 different lieux-dits). A more elegant and slightly fresher nose is composed by aromas of black cherry, raspberry and pretty violet nuances. There is a really lovely texture to the delicious, saline-inflected and sneaky long finish that is very well-balanced. A quality Chambolle villages. (89-91)/2025+د.إ3,020.00 -
Vinous (90-92)
The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a vivid bouquet with red cherries, cranberry and violet scents, actually, quite Vosne-like in personality. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, quite poised and tense with a dash of spice on the finish. This is a delicious Chambolle that should give 12-15 years' drinking pleasure.د.إ3,560.00 -
Decanter (92)
This exemplary village-level Chambolle has more stuffing than many, with ripe plummy fruit and notes of earth and mineral. The structure is firm and tannic and shows the vintage's freshness, drawing the wine to a stunning, elegant conclusion. The grapes come from 11 parcels totaling 0.85 hectares in a selection of lieux-dits scattered throughout the village, including Les Cras, Les Nazoires, Les Condemennes, and others. The grapes are mostly destemmed, slowly fermented on native yeasts over 18 days, and will be aged in mainly used barrels over two winters.د.إ3,165.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)
Lovely glowing purple, this is very sensual with an immediate red fruit charm. Very pretty yet with a fresh intensity, redcurrant and raspberry, above all a sense of purity and energy. This will make a beautiful Chambolle. Drink from 2028-2033.د.إ3,165.00 -
Decanter (95)
Hudelot-Noëllat's 0.8ha holding is made up of two parcels, both of them in the best bit of the Grand Cru. Aged in 40% new wood, this is a not a blockbuster style by any means, emphasising freshness, balance and harmony instead. Floral, racy and supple, it has well-integrated 40% new wood, some vanilla spice and a poised, elegant finish.د.إ3,010.00 -
Vinous (94-96)
The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very well-defined bouquet, quite mineral-driven with crushed rock and pressed iris flower combined with dark cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, very focused with quite a strict and saline finish. There is a sense of class here and it has the substance to age well in bottle.د.إ4,040.00 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is quite open and aromatic on the nose with bright red and black fruit, iris flower and touches of blue fruit. The palate is beautifully balanced with a very fine bead of acidity, blood orange and savoury notes. Quite good backbone here, a Clos de Vougeot that deserves cellaring.د.إ5,820.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)
A vivid mid purple. The bouquet suggests some concentration but a youthful hiding of the detail. On the palate, this is clearly extremely well-constructed and the deep red fruit fills the mouth. Tannins are fine boned, and there is enough acidity. Let this age quietly for a decade and a fine Clos V will emerge. Drink from 2032-2040.د.إ5,820.00 -

This impressive white wine from red wine specialist Charles van Canneyt at Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat dispels the myth that one can’t do both. The aromas begin with a hint of lemon peel and white flowers and then opens up to encompass quince, hazelnut, and spice. The beautiful freshness of the year balances out the impressive concentration of the wine to lead to a surprisingly long finish. 2021 is van Canneyt’s fifth vintage of this wine, whose vines were previously worked by Domaine Coche-Dury.د.إ1,355.00 -

Wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, red fruit compote, potpourri and smoked meats, the 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers is medium to full-bodied, gourmand and textural, with a deep core of fruit framed by rich structuring tannins and ripe acids. This is a dramatic but nicely balanced Murgers from Hudelot-Noellat.د.إ3,500.00 -

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Murgers 1er Cru has a crystalline bouquet with red cherries, cassis and iris flower, just a little reduction here that will dissipate with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. Not a deep Les Murgers, this has something "airy" about it, so elegant and refined on the finish. Beautiful.د.إ4,665.00 -

The dark mulberry and cassis fruit have a slightly rustic edge with lovely notes of cigar leaf, mineral, and earth. The texture is dense and tannic, yet there is an elegance as well brought by the fresh acidity that produces a lively feel on the palate and leads to a lingering finish. The grapes come from the 0.70-hectare domaine-owned parcel and are partially destemmed before gentle fermentation and ageing in cask (20% new). The overall effect is closer to the domaine’s wines in Vosne-Romanée, yet there is a touch of muscular Nuits style.د.إ6,285.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)
A pleasing ruby colour. The bouquet shows the perfect match of Vosne hedonistic fruit with the extra weight of Nuits-St-Georges. Fruit floods the palate, dark raspberry, a light acidity, tannins submerged beneath the fruit, a light touch of oak, and remarkably persistent. Very fine indeed. Enjoy it because two thirds of the plot on 161/49 rootstock was taken out after the 2022 harvest. Drink from 2032-2040.د.إ3,025.00 -
Decanter (98)
This 0.29ha parcel was planted (or replanted) in two stages - the 1930s and 1978 - so it has a high average age but plenty of concentration and complexity. It's one of my red wines of the vintage in 2017, with a heavenly perfume, lovely wild strawberry and summer orchard scents, fine-grained tannins, some sweet spices and refreshing minerality. Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-95)
(25% vendange entier): Good bright, full red. Complex, inviting nose combines raspberry, rose petal and orange zest. Intensely flavored and sharply delineated, showing excellent lift and verve to its red fruit and soil flavors. An element of medicinal red cherry and emerging minerality suggest that this silky, deep wine will enjoy a graceful evolution in bottle. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins and lovely rising perfume. With time in the glass, this wine demonstrated its firm spine more clearly.د.إ19,815.00 -

I knew that the 2014 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru would be great when I tasted it from barrel last year...but not this great. It has a wonderful, tensile bouquet that just seems to sparkle. The fruit is so crystalline and laden with energy and mineralité that you almost have to sit down! The palate is surfeit with energy, the fruit perhaps a little darker than in barrel with white pepper, spices towards the almost Richebourg-like finish. Tasting them side-by-side, I would err for this over the Richebourg - it is a magnificent wine from Charles van Canneyt.د.إ11,355.00 -

This 1920 parcel is situated in the northern part of the Romanée-St-Vivant grand cru, very close to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's holdings - and it's often a match for that wine. It's detailed, lacy and refreshing, with adroitly integrated 50% new wood and layers of red cherry, raspberry and red plum fruit. It has focussed acidity and palate-caressing tannins. The 2018 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru has a very candied, aniseed-tinged bouquet that contains impressive intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, lovely orange-zest infused red fruit, gentle but insistent grip with an arresting, white pepper/spicy finish that leaves the tongue tingling. Vinous (95)
The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru has a slightly meaty/feral bouquet, just a hint of gaminess that might become more conspicuous with bottle age. Otherwise I find this well defined and with flattering red cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is a fine bead of acidity here, a pleasant fleshy mouthfeel towards the finish and a residual salinity that beckons you back for the next sip. The 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is showing brilliantly this year, wafting from the glass with a deep-pitched bouquet of cassis, blackberries, spices and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich and enveloping, its textural attack segueing into a deep and layered core, concluding with a long and penetrating finish.د.إ8,210.00 -
Burghound (90-92)
An exuberantly expressive and spicy nose offers up a lovely mélange of pure red and dark cherry and floral aromas. The sleek, indeed satin-textured middle weight flavors brim with minerality on the super-saline infused finish. I really like the delineation and energy here plus the mid-palate concentration is better than usual. In 2016 this is very Chambollesque in character.د.إ4,200.00
