Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)
5 Star Wine. Beautiful colour here, a darker crimson, and the fruit is magical. Perfectly on the red and black cusp while the whole bunches add a floral note. The Clos du Fonteny is on terrific form today with a fine balance of acidity to finish, alongside balanced tannins. A fine long aftertaste. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted Nov 2024.د.إ2,885.00 -
(6x75cl) 2021Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)
5 Star Wine. Glowing mid purple. A very gorgeous bouquet, brilliant purity, has been like this all the way through. Not looking for descriptive words here, this is immaculate and has retained delicacy. Very long, very fine with some rose petals at the finish. Delicacy with tensile strength. No sign of a second-class vintage here!د.إ7,111.00 -
Burghound (91-94)
(Sweet Spot) (from a .25 ha parcel that is located on the southern side of the vineyard near En Ergot). Here there is sufficient reduction to blur the nuances of what are clearly floral-suffused red berry aromas. There is excellent freshness and verve to the intensely mineral-driven middle weight flavors that terminate in a linear, chiseled, austere and very serious finale. This is beautiful but it’s also a ‘buy and forget you own it’ wine.د.إ3,410.00 -
(6x75cl) 2016Vinous (88-91)
(losses to frost were only 30% here, vs. 80% for the Grasses Têtes): Good dark red. Very ripe aromas of black cherry and mocha. At once sweeter and sappier than the Grasses Têtes, offering noteworthy concentration and definition to its juicy dark fruit flavors. Showing much more early personality too. Finishes with serious but pliant tannins.د.إ1,765.00 -
(3x75cl) 2016The Bruno Clair Marsannay Rouge 2016 is a splendid embodiment of fine French winemaking. Expertly crafted in the heart of Burgundy, this charming Pinot Noir captures the essence of its Marsannay terroir with finesse. Its brilliance stems from Bruno Clair's philosophical winemaking approach, one that emphasizes minimal interference and meticulous attention to detail. An advocate of sustainable viticulture, Clair's respect for the soil affords a robust concentration of flavour.
This wine displays vibrant ruby hues, exuding ripe red fruits, including cherries and currants on the nose. On the palate, it impresses with its elegant tannins, the subtle spiciness of clove blending with its fruit-driven core. The wine's natural acidity and balance make it accessible within its youthful stage, whilst indicating a long life ahead.
The Bruno Clair Marsannay Rouge 2016 is a testament to the producer's profound understanding of the vine and a dedication to the authentic expression of its origin.

Very perfumed and pretty with cherry, dried fruit and orange peel. Hints of sandalwood, too. Full body, layered and refined. Smoke, tar and spice aftertaste to the fruit. Drink in 2019.د.إ2,880.00 -

Incredible aromas of violets, roses and blue fruits. So perfumed. Never smelled a wine like this before. Full body, perfectly integrated tannins and bright, vivid acidity. Extremely long and endless. A seamless and great one. An evocative wine that makes you think. Needs three to five years of bottle age on release. Unique red. Available in 2019.د.إ6,990.00 -

The 2014 Barbaresco Rabajà is gorgeous. Powerful and explosive, the 2014 possesses stunning depth and intensity in all of its dimensions. Spice, menthol and orange peel give the 2014 a level of exoticism that is compelling, while beams of searing tannin announce the presence and pedigree of Rabajà. Intense, tannic and yet also very precise, with soaring structure and terrific persistence, the 2014 Rabajà is the best wine the Bruno Giacosa estate has made in many years.د.إ4,140.00 -

The 2008 Barbaresco Santo Stefano has the same color the 1987 had when it was 20 years old, which is to say almost rose colored. I don’t think the 2008 will make its 20th birthday, however. This is a light, translucent, fleeting wine with very little fruit and body. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2016.د.إ3,755.00 -

The 2018 Bruno Giacosa Barolo is very rich and hedonistic, with ripe strawberries and rose hip and notes of incense, lilies and violets. It is a lovely nose, persistent, intense and enticing and on the palate it is like falling into a soft velvety bed of rose petals. It already has such beautiful harmony and poise. It has a lush, sensual texture of crushed velvet, and is full-bodied without feeling heavy. There are plenty of dense, savory tannins extending the very long finish, creating a combination of seductive charm and power. This is something special, a great achievement in this vintage. Wait 2-3 years at least but I would not want to miss that young fragrance.د.إ2,260.00 -

Impressive fresh leather-clad red cherries with a subtle earthiness in the background. Quite pure. Floral and aromatic. The palate has a very elegant yet powerful core of blueberries and cherries. A smooth release of fruit sweetness into the fresh and vibrant finish. Elegant and classic. More open than normal. Impressive now but better from 2022.د.إ2,920.00 -

The 2004 Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto is simply as profound as wine can be. Period. Strikingly layered, perfumed and sensual to the core, the 2004 has it all. Next to the straight Falletto, the Rocche is more refined but also quite a bit more backward as well. Mint, rose petal and melted road tar grace the exquisite finish. The level of intensity here is simply mind-blowing. At ten years of age, the 2004 Rocche is a youngster, but it is clearly a wine of divine inspiration. For readers who look at the numbers, the score is the only possible score.د.إ18,565.00 -

The 2023 Bourgogne Blanc Clos Alfred derives from a parcel planted 20 years ago at 14,000 vines per hectare, and it has produced a deliciously pure, charming wine this year, bursting with aromas of pear, honeyed peach and fresh bread, with a medium-bodied, fleshy and fresh palate.د.إ663.00 -

The 2023 Mercurey 1er Cru Les Champs Martin is lovely, revealing aromas of crisp Anjou pear, clear honey, wet stones and white flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, satiny and layered, it's dense and concentrated, with a cool core of fruit and a long, saline finish.د.إ1,462.00 -

Notes of sweet stone fruits, waxy citrus and fresh melon preface the 2023 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos des Barraults Blanc, a medium- to full-bodied, satiny and layered wine that marries rich, almost unctuous fruit with mouthwateringly mordant dry extract to deliver a wine built more like a red than a white.د.إ1,462.00 -

The 2023 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos de Champs Martin Cuvée Carline is the most introverted of Lorenzon's reds this year, unwinding in the glass to offer up notes of dark cherries mingled with spices, licorice and bitter chocolate. Full-bodied, dense and muscular, it's serious and concentrated, with an almost rhodanien personality, concluding with an iris-inflected finish. This will require patience.د.إ1,655.00 -

The 2023 Mercurey 1er Cru Pièce 15 is an especially extrovert rendition of this cuvée, a bottling produced from 15 small, old-vine parcels growing on calcium-rich soils that Lorenzon considers his finest plots. Bursting with aromas of ripe citrus fruits, flowers, clear honey, buttery pastry and wet stones, it's medium- to full-bodied, rich and ample, with a fleshy, layered core and a long, expansive finish. Of course, it may shut down with some additional time in bottle, but for now, the 2023 is wide open.د.إ2,920.00 -

From blocks within Lorenzon's holdings with particularly poor soils, the 2023 Montagny 1er Cru Le Choix du Roi offers up notes of lime leaf, lemon oil, white flowers and wet stones, followed by a medium- to full-bodied, suave and polished palate that's long, penetrating and saline. It's both the most mineral and the most elegant of these Montagny bottlings, setting the bar high for the appellation.د.إ1,489.00 -

The 2023 Montagny 1er Cru Le Mont Laurent derives from east-facing slopes, and it's denser and more structured than the outgoing Truffière, unfurling to reveal notes of crisp stone fruit, honey and jasmine, followed by a medium- to full-bodied, fleshy and layered palate built around bright acids and chalky structure.د.إ1,379.00 -

The 2008 Extra Brut N.P.U. Nec Plus Ultra is a brilliant, taut Champagne. The combination of vintage and the extra brut style favored a Paillard that yields a young Champagne that is quite austere. It will be interesting to see if the 2008 fills out with time in bottle. Today it is piercing in its intensity. Disgorged: April, 2019.د.إ1,995.00 -

The 2012 Barbaresco Riserva Currà is a real knockout. Intense, sweet and beautifully perfumed, the 2012 offers a super-classic expression of this Neive vineyard. Twenty four months in oak have helped soften some of the angular contours the 2012 had when it was younger. Hints of orange peel, white pepper, dried herbs and cherries linger on the exotic, beguiling finish. What a gorgeous wine this is. The 2012 spent 22 months in cask. To be released in 2017.د.إ1,555.00 -

The 2018 Barolo Cannubi is pliant, layered and super-expressive. Even so, readers will have to be patient, as the 2018 needs time to be at its very best. Dark cherry fruit, plum, lavender and spice add gravitas. Like all of these wines, the 2018 is understated and lighter in body than most years, but all the elements are nicely balanced.د.إ9,390.00 -

The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero is the most reticent of these 2018 Barolos, but it was also bottled nearly a year later. All the signatures are there, though, starting with the effusive bouquet that makes the Burlotto Monvigliero so alluring. Rose petal, spice, orange peel, kirsch and raspberry unfurl gradually in the glass. The 2018 is understated and mysterious today. I can't wait to see how it ages.د.إ9,350.00 -

The 2021 Pelaverga Verduno is classy and elegant to the core. Crushed red berry fruit, sweet floral notes and a kick of citrus are all laced together. Burlotto's silky, polished Pelaverga is about as good as it gets for this quirky variety. Aging in steel helped preserve quite a bit of freshness.د.إ924.00 -

I never swallow samples during tasting but got pretty close with this wine. It’s just so damn delicious with layer upon layer of fruit and savoury characters that defy description. A tease of fruit sweetness is balanced by gentle tannins and subtle acidity that drive a very lengthy finish. A seriously good Pinot Noir.د.إ1,695.00 -
The Real Review (96)
Intense, vibrant pinot noir showing real depth and complexity with nuanced floral, dark cherry and raspberry flavours together with thyme, anise, spice and a suggestion of white pepper. A backbone of fruity acidity reveals energy and helps to promote a lingering finish. A serious wine from one of Central Otago's top producers.د.إ1,525.00
