I've tasted very few wines that feel as complete as the 2022 Occidental Cuvée Elizabeth. Like the 2021 vintage, it’s the most floral and ethereal in the lineup, but this new release reaches new heights. It comes from the estate Bodega Headlands vineyard, where the vines already tend to give tiny berries and low yields. With 2022 being such a warm vintage, the crop was even smaller than usual, making the flavours and aromas way more vivid. With a highly expressive nose, you get a beautiful bouquet of violets and wet lavender mixed with the scent of cool, damp soil. A dusting of baking spice and a clean, salty breeze root this wine unmistakably in the West Sonoma Coast. On the palate, cranberries, pomegranate juice, and wild berries blend into a juicy and lively core. Satin-fine tannins bring just enough structure without getting in the way of the wine’s elegant frame. Bright acidity lifts everything into a long, satisfying finish. It’s a wow-moment wine. Black cherry, cloves, melted road tar, licorice and leather all run through Oddero's 2016 Barolo Villero. Deep on the palate with huge swaths of tannin, the Villero is a decidedly big, virile wine that is going to need time to fully come together. I imagine it will always be a powerhouse, however. The Villero is not especially elegant; the bombastic style clearly favors power over finesse - at least, it does today. Grupo Bodegas Olarra was founded in 1973 and is now a large organisation producing wines under three different bodega names in Rioja and beyond. The Laztana 2011 is a blend of about 80% Tempranillo with 10% Garnacha and the remainder Graciano and Mazuelo, from vines aged on average for more than 30 years. Fermentation in stainless steel was followed by malolactic fermentation and nearly three months on lees in new 225-litre Allier oak barrels, then six further months in new oak before cask-ageing up to 27 months in total in a mix of new to five-year-old Allier and US barrels. The wine was subsequently cellared for 40 further months in bottle prior to its first release. Sarah Jane Evans MW - Truffly, balsamic, cherry aromas. Full-bodied and fleshy in the mouth, a really youthful wine, packed with energy. Notes of oranges, blackberries and redcurrants abound, then following through with a firm structure of tannin. Creamy layers of tannin are very appealing, and the strong core of acidity makes this a great wine for food. Very long, confident, concentrated finish.
