Alongside Penfolds as the most historic and prestigious producers in the country, Henschke has had its place as one of the definitive names in Australian fine wine reaffirmed recently by winning Halliday Wine Companion's 'Winery of the Year 2021'.

Their flagship Hill of Grace rivals Penfolds Grange as the most sought-after wine in Australia but while Penfolds takes the blending approach, Henschke are masters at getting their most out of their majestic single-vineyards.

While Hill of Grace will set you back at least £500 per bottle, there is still fantastic value to be had from this estate for those looking for Henschke's signature single-vineyard approach but without the hefty price-tag. One of these 'less-expensive offerings that illustrate the family’s commitment to quality' (WA) is the new release of Marble Angel Vineyard 2018.

Having missed the 2016 and 2017 vintages, the Marble Angel Vineyard is returned triumphantly with a 2018 that 'takes no prisoners' according to Australian critic James Halliday. Scoring 96 points from Halliday and 94 points from the Wine Advocate's Joe Czerwinski, it offers the 'deep, intense cassis fruit' (WA) that we know and love from South Australian Cabernet. With a wonderfully rich textured, this full-bodied 2018 is 'generous and structured at the same time' (WA) which is why it will cellar up to 2035.

The wine is named after Julius Henschke, a stonemason and sculptor, who was famous for his marble angels that were made from the fine white stone sourced from the quarry right next to the vineyard. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from 40+ year old vines at Light Pass in the Barossa Valley, there is no doubt it is produced very much in the 'Henschke style' (Andrew Caillard MW).

Released at only £188 per case IB, Czerwinksi notes that he 'would rather drink this than most California Cabernets' that he has tried at this price point, highlighting that the Henschke Marble Angel Vineyard 2018 is one of the best New World Cabernets under £200 per case.
