Barolo 2017
Barolo 2017s - First Impression by Walter Speller at JancisRobinson.com
Vintage 2017 was the hottest and driest vintage on record in Italy. It was undoubtedly a year that required agile vineyard management and an expert understanding of the terroir. Those wine-makers who were able to successfully mitigate the effect of heat, slow down ripening and pull forward harvest dates were the ones who triumphed in 2017.
Walter Speller at jancisrobinson.com released his first impressions on Barolo 2017 last month. Calling it a “surprising vintage”, he says most of the Barolo 2017s he tasted did indeed display “freshness and elegance” despite the heatwave conditions, a testament to how modern wine-makers are rising to the challenge of a warming world!

Vinous (95)The 2017 Barolo Mosconi is a powerful, brooding wine. Black cherry, gravel, dried herbs, scorched earth, spice and leather add to an impression of gravitas. This is an especially somber, potent Barolo that needs time to soften. Even so, it will always be a brute. The substantial finish is a thing of beauty. The Barolo Mosconi emerges from the estates oldest vines, which are 70-80 years old, and is aged in barrique. |

Vinous (94)The 2017 Barolo Via Nuova is stellar. In 2017, the Via Nuova is a bit nervous, the sign of a Barolo that is going to need a number of years to unwind. Bright red-toned fruit, chalk, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper add pretty aromatic top notes. As always, the Via Nuova is the most taut Barolo in the range. Via Nuova is a blend of seven vineyard sites; Terlo, Paiagallo and Liste (in Barolo); Ravera and Mosconi (in Monforte); and Gabutti and Baudana (in Serralunga). |

Vinous (95)The 2017 Barolo Mosconi Vigna Ped is deep, resonant and expansive, as wines from this site tend to be. In this tasting, the Mosconi is wonderfully deep. Its stature alone is compelling. And yet there is so much to the Mosconi. Readers will find a Barolo that melds together a rich, racy expression of fruit with plenty of structure that wraps everything together. Rich red fruit, blood orange, tar, spice and cedar build as the 2017 gains volume through to the finish. |

Piedmont | - | 94 (VN) | د.إ5,331.03
Vinous (94)The 2017 Barolo Enrico VI, from the Villero cru, is striking. In 2017, the Villero shows a level of translucence I don’t remember seeing in this wine for as long as I have followed the domaine. Whether that is a reflection of the year or a move towards organic farming will only become evident in future vintages. Dark cherry, spice, new leather, menthol and licorice all run through this wonderfully transparent Barolo from Cordero di Montezemolo. |

Piedmont | - | 93 (VN) | د.إ5,331.03
Vinous (93)The 2017 Barolo Gattera is sensual and wonderfully expressive. Succulent dark cherry, spice, mint, rose petal and a kiss of French oak meld together in a racy, inviting Barolo that will drink well right out of the gate. There's lovely immediacy to the 2017, but also enough structure to allow for 15-20 years of fine drinking, maybe more. |

Piedmont | - | 91 (VN) | د.إ5,331.03
Vinous (91)The 2017 Barolo Monfalletto is a pretty, polished wine to drink now and over the next handful of years, maybe more. Alberto Cordero di Montezemolo has succeeded in crafting a Barolo that is unusually silky for the year, with little of the edginess found in so many wines. The 2017 is a bit light, but it is also impeccably balanced and a real delight. Crushed red berries, spice and gentle floral notes linger on the soft, open-knit finish. |

Crissante Alessandria Barolo Morra

|
Piedmont | - | 88 (VN) | د.إ688.85
Vinous (88)The 2017 Barolo del Comune di La Morra is a huge, powerful wine for an estate that has typically made much more understated Barolos. Then again, that is 2017. A burst of black cherry, plum, smoke, scorched earth and licorice gives the 2017 its burly, potent personality. The 2017 is a good wine for drinking over the next few years. Aeration helps the tannins soften a touch, but what remains is a rich, potent expression of La Morra. |

A wine that punches well above its weight, challenging many a cru La Morra for elegance, balance and longevity in its structure, this is a well-made wine that offers an eloquent insight in to the charms of this most elegant of terroirs making up the patchwork quilt of Barolo. Fine, juicy red and black berry fruit and a subtle floral bitterness to the palate make this essential reading for the vintage.

An invitation to delight the finest palates, the Curto Barolo La Foia Arborina 2017 is a nebbiolo of impeccable composition. Made by Nadia Curto, a fourth-generation vintner, this opulent wine hails from the Arborina Cru vineyards of Barolo, Italy. Possessing a powerful nose of dark fruit and roses, it graces the palate with red cherry, leather, and a hint of cinnamon. The grapes for Curto Barolo La Foia Arborina 2017 are hand-harvested and undergo traditional fermentation before spending two years ageing in oak barrels. This leaves the wine with a firm structure and velvety tannins that only mature Barolo can offer. An enduring finish ties the experience together, providing a charming balance of intensity and elegance. Perfectly embodying the terroir from which it was born, the Curto Barolo La Foia Arborina 2017 is an exceptional testament to the traditional methods of winemaking carried on in the Curto family. |

Vinous (93)Davide Fregonese' s 2017 Barolo Prapò is a powerful, burly wine. A blast of dark cherry, sage, menthol, licorice, game and tobacco hits the palate as this potent, muscular Barolo shows off its Serralunga personality. I would give the 2017 a few years to soften. |

Vinous (95)Conterno's 2017 Barolo Ginestra is a wine of gravitas and pure power. All of the muscle of Ginestra comes through loud and clear. I am not sure the tannins will ever fully soften - this is Ginestra after all - but there is certainly plenty of depth. To be honest, today I find the Comune bottling to have better balance and more finesse. |
