Barolo 2017
Barolo 2017s - First Impression by Walter Speller at JancisRobinson.com
Vintage 2017 was the hottest and driest vintage on record in Italy. It was undoubtedly a year that required agile vineyard management and an expert understanding of the terroir. Those wine-makers who were able to successfully mitigate the effect of heat, slow down ripening and pull forward harvest dates were the ones who triumphed in 2017.
Walter Speller at jancisrobinson.com released his first impressions on Barolo 2017 last month. Calling it a “surprising vintage”, he says most of the Barolo 2017s he tasted did indeed display “freshness and elegance” despite the heatwave conditions, a testament to how modern wine-makers are rising to the challenge of a warming world!

Very subtle aromas of dried strawberry with cedar and flowers that follow through to a full body with tight, linear tannins that are focused and polished. Earth, spice and stone undertones. Extremely firm and long. Succulent. Racy and driven. Needs four or five years to open.د.إ4,505.00 -
James Suckling (98)
Extremely perfumed and beautiful, offering rose-petal and lavender aromas with some tar to the ripe cherries. Some spice, such as nutmeg, as well as light hazelnut. Fresh. Full-bodied, very tight and compact with firmness and wonderful length and focus. Consistent drive through the center of the wine. Better after 2025.د.إ1,455.00 -

Dried strawberry with asphalt, dried meat and acorns. Lots of flowers as well. Full-bodied and powerful with fantastic depth of fruit and layers of chewy, ripe tannins. An extremely powerful and muscular wine, yet it maintains its energy and verve. Try after 2024.د.إ1,945.00 -

A little closed initially but allow it time and broad, plump but fresh ripe fruits soon sweep across the palate. Initial impressions are of cool berry flavours with a brambly earthiness to the fruit. The palate gradually unfurls with a mix of bright and dark tayberry and loganberry notes with cooling hints of moss and undergrowth, whilst a lingering suggestion of plum sits in the background. Overall this feels like one of the breezier, fresher wines in this cellar albeit in a solidly built style - crisp fruits in a full and gripping structure. Fossati sits mostly in the Barolo commune, tipping into La Morra at its steepest western end. The slope is relatively gentle and the soil is mainly deep and clay influenced, though is much stonier at its steepest part at the top of the hill. As well as soil depth, the vineyard is also characterised by its very uniform east/south east exposure and its high altitude of 340 to 480m above sea level. Voerzio have a small plot planted with 35-40 year old vines.د.إ4,795.00 -

Sweet berry with light tar and hazelnut on the nose. It’s full-bodied with creamy, chewy tannins that are fine-grained and lead you down to a long, energetic finish. It goes on and on. Drink after 2025.د.إ3,095.00 -

The 2017 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is a pleasant, easygoing Barolo from Roberto Voerzio. Lifted, perfumed Rocche aromatics meld into a core of crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, blood orange and spice. The 2017 is a bit more nervy than most vintages, but the brisk tannins help convey a measure of freshness that is quite welcome in this vintage. The 2017 is a solid wine, but far from inspiring.د.إ5,331.03 -

The 2017 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is forward, open-knit and very nicely balanced. Silky tannins wrap around a core of succulent red berry fruit. Medium in body, gracious and so inviting, the 2017 will be easy to drink and enjoy pretty much upon release and for a number of years thereafter.د.إ4,695.71 -

The Segni di Langa, Barolo, Nicbab 2017 is an exquisite exhibit of Italian fine wine-making prowess. Hailing from the renowned vineyards in Langhe, an elite wine-producing region of Piedmont, this Barolo exemplifies the meticulous virtues of its producer, Segni di Langa. The 2017 vintage; splendidly matured, offers an immersive taste experience. The grapes are hand-harvested, fermented in stainless steel, and age on fine lees for 36 months in traditional large oak barrels. The result is a sensual harmony of rich, ripe fruit flavours balanced with pronounced tannins and remarkably structured acidity. Nose reveals intense aromas of cherries, roses and a hint of liquorice, typical of Nebbiolo grapes. It beautifully pairs with rich recipes, particularly Italian game and truffle dishes. Indeed, Segni di Langa, Barolo, Nicbab 2017 is an emblem of an ardent commitment to maintaining regional viticulture authenticity. A masterpiece for the discerning wine lover.

The 2017 Barolo Cannubi is another terrific wine from 2017 Barolo Cannubi. Expressive and translucent in the glass, the 2017 is wonderfully expressive from the moment it is first poured. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, spice, chalk and white pepper lend striking aromatic presence. Deceptively medium in body, the 2017 has plenty of grip. It is one of the finest wines I have tasted from Fratelli Serio & Battista Borgogno.د.إ1,635.67 -

The 2017 Barolo is a pretty dense wine from proprietor Nicola Oberto. I am used to seeing a bit more finesse and transparency here, but the 2017 is quite a powerhouse. Large-grained tannins add to that impression. Time in the glass brings out hints of spice and tobacco, and yet the 2017 remains a bit rough around the edges.د.إ5,382.14 -
