Barolo 2017
Barolo 2017s - First Impression by Walter Speller at JancisRobinson.com
Vintage 2017 was the hottest and driest vintage on record in Italy. It was undoubtedly a year that required agile vineyard management and an expert understanding of the terroir. Those wine-makers who were able to successfully mitigate the effect of heat, slow down ripening and pull forward harvest dates were the ones who triumphed in 2017.
Walter Speller at jancisrobinson.com released his first impressions on Barolo 2017 last month. Calling it a “surprising vintage”, he says most of the Barolo 2017s he tasted did indeed display “freshness and elegance” despite the heatwave conditions, a testament to how modern wine-makers are rising to the challenge of a warming world!

Conterno's 2017 Barolo Cerretta offers a classic expression of this Serralunga site. The tannins are just a bit nervy today, which lends a feeling of energy and brightness that is palpable. Bright floral and white pepper accents lift bright red-toned fruit in a Barolo that is wonderfully translucent and nuanced.د.إ4,330.00 -

I tasted the Giacomo Conterno 2017 Barolo Francia shortly before bottling. Like Roberto Conterno's other wines from this controversial vintage, this wine shines with brilliant and unexpected purity and intensity that is harder to find in its peers. It shows a deep understanding of the potential of a warm growing season, and the Nebbiolo is supple, velvety and uncharacteristically exuberant (for a grape whose elegance starts famously with understatement). Francia in Serralunga d'Alba evokes power and profound depth, with black and purple fruit highlights, rusty nail, crème de cassis, grilled rosemary and reddish rock or baked terracotta. The wine carries its considerable fruit weight with grace, and at the end of the day, it offers a complete portrait of vintage, variety and vintner.د.إ4,904.76 -

The 2017 Barolo is incredibly impressive. Rich, ample and wonderfully seductive, the 2017 hits all the right notes. Succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice, spice and menthol flesh out as this super-expressive, inviting Barolo shows off its considerable charms. Fenocchio’s straight Barolo stands out in its peer group in 2017. Readers looking for an affordable Barolo to drink over the next 10-15 years won’t want to miss it.د.إ752.50 -

The 2017 Barolo Villero is another terrific wine in this range from Fenocchio. Dark and layered in the glass, with veins of the firm tannin that often defines Villero, the 2017 is wonderfully expressive. Sweet red cherry, iron, dried herbs and earthy tones all open in the glass. Readers will find a tightly wound, savory Barolo of real character. Give it a few years to unwind.د.إ352.90 -
