Hudelot-Noellat Meursault Clos des Ecoles 2020 stands as a testament to the unparalleled craftsmanship synonymous with Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. Cultivated in the esteemed Clos des Ecoles vineyard, each Chardonnay grape is meticulously hand-harvested to capture the essence of the terroir. The Hudelot-Noellat estate, renowned for its dedication to quality, employs both traditional and innovative winemaking techniques. After rigorous selection, the grapes undergo cold fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, preserving the varietal’s natural acidity and fresh fruit character. The wine is then aged for twelve months in a combination of French oak barrels and stainless steel vats, striking a balance between subtle oak influence and the pure expression of the Chardonnay. The 2020 vintage benefits from an optimal growing season, resulting in a wine of exceptional balance and depth. Aromas of ripe citrus, white flowers, and nuanced minerality unfold on the nose, while the palate delivers layers of lemon zest, toasted almonds, and a lingering, elegant finish. Hudelot-Noellat Meursault Clos des Ecoles 2020 is a refined choice for discerning enthusiasts seeking a distinguished Burgundy white. |

Decanter (93)This impressive white wine from red wine specialist Charles van Canneyt at Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat dispels the myth that one can’t do both. The aromas begin with a hint of lemon peel and white flowers and then opens up to encompass quince, hazelnut, and spice. The beautiful freshness of the year balances out the impressive concentration of the wine to lead to a surprisingly long finish. 2021 is van Canneyt’s fifth vintage of this wine, whose vines were previously worked by Domaine Coche-Dury. |

Wine Advocate (91-93)Wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, red fruit compote, potpourri and smoked meats, the 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers is medium to full-bodied, gourmand and textural, with a deep core of fruit framed by rich structuring tannins and ripe acids. This is a dramatic but nicely balanced Murgers from Hudelot-Noellat. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Murgers 1er Cru has a crystalline bouquet with red cherries, cassis and iris flower, just a little reduction here that will dissipate with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. Not a deep Les Murgers, this has something "airy" about it, so elegant and refined on the finish. Beautiful. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)(5-Star Wine) A pleasing ruby colour. The bouquet shows the perfect match of Vosne hedonistic fruit with the extra weight of Nuits-St-Georges. Fruit floods the palate, dark raspberry, a light acidity, tannins submerged beneath the fruit, a light touch of oak, and remarkably persistent. Very fine indeed. Enjoy it because two thirds of the plot on 161/49 rootstock was taken out after the 2022 harvest. Drink from 2032-2040. |

Tim Atkin MW (98)The Richebourg is just a notch above the same domaine's Romanée-St-Vivant in 2012, as it is at several other domaines, but it's a close run thing. This is tighter, more focused and limestone fresh, with a hint of "good" reduction, considerable restraint, sweet raspberry and red cherry fruit and pithy focus and length. Understated. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)(5-Star Wine) A noble purple in colour. A fresh suave even plump fruit on the nose, pure in its raspberry profile. Three barrels, two from Cavin who Charles likes (he uses five cooper in all). Not just brilliantly seductive, this digs much deeper yet still finishes on the very fresh red fruit style of the vintage. Thoroughly exciting. Drink from 2030-2040. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-95)(25% vendange entier): Good bright, full red. Complex, inviting nose combines raspberry, rose petal and orange zest. Intensely flavored and sharply delineated, showing excellent lift and verve to its red fruit and soil flavors. An element of medicinal red cherry and emerging minerality suggest that this silky, deep wine will enjoy a graceful evolution in bottle. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins and lovely rising perfume. With time in the glass, this wine demonstrated its firm spine more clearly. |

Wine Advocate (97)I knew that the 2014 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru would be great when I tasted it from barrel last year...but not this great. It has a wonderful, tensile bouquet that just seems to sparkle. The fruit is so crystalline and laden with energy and mineralité that you almost have to sit down! The palate is surfeit with energy, the fruit perhaps a little darker than in barrel with white pepper, spices towards the almost Richebourg-like finish. Tasting them side-by-side, I would err for this over the Richebourg - it is a magnificent wine from Charles van Canneyt. |

Wine Advocate (92)The 2015 Vougeot 1er Cru Les Petits Vougeot reveals attractive aromas of Griotte cherry, rose petal, dried flowers and orange rind, with little to hint at the savory nuances to come with bottle age. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, sappy and transparent, its caressing, velvety attack segueing into a chalky mid-palate and finish. A very elegant rendition of this lovely climat below Les Amoureuses. |

Burghound (90-92)An exuberantly expressive and spicy nose offers up a lovely mélange of pure red and dark cherry and floral aromas. The sleek, indeed satin-textured middle weight flavors brim with minerality on the super-saline infused finish. I really like the delineation and energy here plus the mid-palate concentration is better than usual. In 2016 this is very Chambollesque in character. |

Wine Advocate (95)The 2015 Vouvray Clos du Bourg Demi-Sec displays a well defined and complex bouquet of ripe and concentrated fruits intertwined with chalky flavors. Dense and elegant on the palate, with a mouth-filling fruit and a perfect sweetness that counterbalances the raciness and firm mineral structure, this is a finesse-full and powerful Chenin with lots of salt and tension. A gorgeous, precise and vivacious wine with great aging potential. |

Wine Advocate (95+)The 2018 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux Première Trie is pure, deep and flinty on the concentrated nose, with very fine oak, toffee and potted ginger aromas. Lush, sweet and generous yet precise and crystalline on the palate, it features very fine tannins, lingering salinity and positive energy. This is a compact, persistent, tightly woven and stimulating Chenin from the Le Mont terroir that reveals firm, tensioned structure and a young finish with potential to improve and refine. Tasted in May 2019. |

Decanter (97)The crown in the Hugel jewels, Schoelhammer comes from 30 rows in the core of Grand Cru Shoenenbourg, high above Riquewihr. An intense, dry and mineral-charged Riesling with floral aromas and concentrated lime/lemon zest flavours. Fermented in neutral oak, this retains absolute purity and clarity of flavour. Bottled in Spring 2012, this vintage was first released in 2018. Still very youthful and with decades ahead. |

Jeb Dunnuck (98+)Now the flagship of this estate, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is 75% Grenache and the rest Cinsault, Mourvedre, and a little Syrah. Sporting a deep ruby/purple hue, it offers a beautiful array of black raspberry and darker cherry fruit as well as lots of graphite, chalky minerality, Provençal garrigue, and spice. Beautiful on the palate as well, this medium to full-bodied effort has a layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, rock-solid underlying structure and concentration, building tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It needs to be forgotten for 2-4 years (although it certainly offers incredible pleasure even today) and will keep for two decades. Tasted twice. |

Jeb Dunnuck (96+)Reminding me of the 2020, the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape is based on 60% Grenache, 16% each Mourvèdre and Cinsault, and the rest Syrah. Its medium ruby hue is followed by a gorgeous perfume of black raspberries, white pepper, Provençal garrigue, and crushed stone-like minerality. With medium to full-bodied richness, a seamless, layered mouthfeel, and ripe, polished, yet building tannins, it's an absolute gem in the vintage that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and cruise over the following decade or more. |

Decanter (97)This compellingly beautiful wine opens with aromas that include a piercing, lemony fruit, salty minerality, chalk, smoke and spice. On the palate, there is a beautiful tension, but also enough substance to give the wine breadth and a lovely, impressive length. It is structured and very crisp, yet still approachable and easy to drink. It was produced from a blend of the lieux-dits Le Cotet and Les Paluets, exclusively fermented in tank. There is immense ageing potential here and you’ll be rewarded for keeping it. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru includes 20% whole bunches this year. It has a slight mintiness on the nose, quite generous if not as complex as the Corton-Bressandes tasted alongside. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, quite strict and fresh with a chalky texture, and a slightly curmudgeonly finish. Give this three to four years in bottle to lighten up. |

Burghound (92-94)A brooding and beautifully complex nose of spiced plum and a remarkably broad mix of dark berry fruit scents is trimmed in a background application of wood. The opulent, rich, round, velvety and wonderfully refined middle weight flavors display excellent mid-palate density and impressive volume on the superbly long finish where a touch of menthol appears. This too is really very good but note well that it's indisputably built-to-age. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (97)The NV (2019) Extra-Brut Mareuil-sur-Aÿ Sous Le Mont is elegant, nuanced and super polished. Cranberry, white pepper, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and rose petal are some of the notes that take shape in the glass. This is one of the most elegant, refined editions of Sous Le Mont I have ever tasted. It's an ethereal, delicate Champagne with an equilibrium defined by grace and a silky, polished finish more than overt power. All this needs is time in bottle to blossom. Closing notes of blood orange and Campari are classic Mareuil. Dosage is 1.7 grams per liter. Disgorged: January 9, 2026. |

Wine Advocate (99)The most harmonious wine of the six lieux-dits this year—and one of the finest renditions of this cuvée—is the 2018-based NV Ambonnay Le Bout du Clos, disgorged in February 2025 without dosage. The wine unfurls from the glass with a deep bouquet of orange oil, dried flowers, lychee and Sichuan pepper, mingled with kumquat and almond paste. On the palate, it is full-bodied and precise, with an elegantly muscular core of fruit, uniting the typical depth of complexity attained in this bottling with ample structuring extract that provides a vivid sense of freshness. Simultaneously grandiose and racy, it is driven by a bright spine of acidity and culminates in a long, searingly saline finish. Multifaceted and complete, it encapsulates everything that is so compelling about the Selosse lieux-dits. As ever, it derives from two south-facing parcels within the same lieu-dit that are characterized by clay-rich soils, and it is composed of approximately 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay, which are picked and pressed together. The historic blend dates back to 2002. |
