Jancis Robinson (17)As with the white version, they pick this vineyard over several days. Final blend in tank, to be bottled by mid February 2021.
Big and broad on the nose with heady, flattering, ‘sweet’ perfume. Lovely freshness and juiciness too. Clos des Mouches is always meant to be delicate. Lovely polish and very easy to like. Already quite approachable

James Suckling (98)The iodine, blackberry and rose-stem character comes through clearly. Plenty of fruit and depth. Medium-bodied with fine tannins that caress the palate and provide endless flavors of Indian spices, flint, nutmeg and light crust. Such refinement and integrity. Drinkable now, but better in three or four years.

Jancis Robinson (17)Cask sample. Mid purplish cherry red. Lovely floral and open nose. So pure and scented with cherry and violets. On the palate, some oak in evidence in sweet spice. Incredibly smooth and rounded texture. Packed with fruit, generous and remarkably approachable. Just fresh enough. Very persistent with that fruit.

Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of dark berry fruit, light seaweed and oyster shell scents, and the 30% whole cluster lends a subtle tertiary aspect. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, slightly chalky tannins. This is very well structured, delivering palpable energy. A saline finish gets the saliva flowing. Just a delicious Beaune Grèves.

James Suckling (96)Perfectly ripe strawberries with raspberry and citrus undertones. It’s medium-to full-bodied with really fine tannins that are nicely wrapped in ripe fruit. There’s a savory, lightly meaty highlight to the flavors. It’s long and complex in the finish. Really balanced and attractive now, but will deliver even more in the future. Better after 2023.

Vinous (93)The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru has an open nose of brambly red fruit, sous-bois and wilted rose petals, very pure and charming, and not dissimilar in style to François Bertheau's Chambolle 1er Cru. The palate is very harmonious, open and transparent. It feels lighter than others, yet the tension and precision will see this age with style, and perhaps it will not close down. Tempting now, but I would prefer to wait. Classy. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Decanter (95)This is a classic 'cuvée ronde', combining fruit from six different Premiers Crus to produce a stylish example of what Véronique Drouhin calls the 'cashmere of Burgundy'. Scented, balanced and ethereal, it's a transparent expression of Chambolle's range of terroirs, with sweet summer berry flavours and fine, velvety tannins. Accomplished stuff.

Tim Atkin MW (94)Most of this fruit comes from domaine-owned parcels, but some is purchased. Six parcels in total contribute to this pretty, floral and silky-textured Chambolle. Sweet red fruits spread gently across the mid-weight palate before a light ganache note joins in and brings the wine into a gently fading finish. 2022-34

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru comes from estate and purchased fruit, five or six different sources blended during vinification, and includes around 35% whole bunches. The bright bouquet offers dark cherries, wild strawberries, and hints of wild heather and sea spray. The medium-bodied palate has pliant tannins, is quite harmonious, and has more dark fruit toward the finish, laced with dark chocolate and brown spices. Very fine.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)Rich fresh purple, quintessential Chambolle elegance, really fine as this cuvée so often is chez Drouhin. Perhaps even more sensual than usual in 2023, stretching out to a very long finish. Picked at the right time, ripe but not overdone. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted Nov 2024.

Vinous (91)Good dark red. Very shy nose hints at crushed stone, menthol, flowers and licorice. Then surprisingly round and charming in the mouth, with a distinctly silky, open-knit texture to the fat dark berry fruit. Not hugely complex but developing nicely. This should give pleasure early.

Burghound (95)A very ripe nose features notes of plum, cassis, humus, forest floor and violet. The velvet-textured, concentrated and very serious big-bodied flavors possess seemingly endless reserves of sappy dry extract which helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine on the mocha-infused finish. This beautifully complex effort is less austere than it usually is at this point though the structure makes it pointedly clear that this is going to age for a very long time.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)Full ripe purple with a classy lively nose. Purity and precision, this is really smart wine, as it has been produced just from their better block. Racy and fresh, 30% whole bunch vinification has worked very well. Excellent length.

Jancis Robinson (17.5)Two parcels, one close to the tower and one at the bottom which they keep separate for quite a while. In hot, dry years such as 2019 and 2020 the bottom bit does very well because it retains moisture. 20% bought in. Final blend in tank, to be bottled by mid February 2021.
Refined, high-toned nose with a meaty undertow. Then a notably sweet palate attack and quite chunky and forceful. Some whole-bunch influence. Clearly a grand cru. Still youthful with a lightly spicy nose. Lots of energy.

Jancis Robinson (17)Deep cherry red. Ripe damson, rich in ripe fruit. But the texture gives elegance to that ripe fruit. Firm, dry with lovely tannin texture. There’s power but the texture is fine to offset the richness of fruit. Chalky aftertaste.

Burghound (93)The ripe and beautifully layered aromas offer up notes of cassis, wild dark berries and plenty of sauvage characteristics. There is lovely sense of underlying tension present on the reasonably concentrated and powerful flavors that also exude evident minerality on the very firm but well-balanced, complex and sneaky long finale. This is an archetypical Cazetiers of muscle and overt power.

Vinous (90-92)The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru, which is a new long-term contract for Drouhin, is lucid ruby in color. It has a fresh raspberry and crushed strawberry nose, touches of mint and allspice emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry. It feels well structured, with good backbone, maybe missing a little tension toward the finish, but persistent and satisfying. Give it two or three years in bottle.

Vinous (94-96)One of my favorites from Drouhin this year is the 2021 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru. Splendid and vivacious red and black fruit vie for attention on the nose, the mineralité underneath almost too easy to overlook. The palate is beautifully-structured with crisp tannins, slightly chalky in texture with a very persistent, finely sculpted finish. Impressive.

Burghound (93)A ripe if highly restrained mix of red and blue fruit is liberally sprinkled with spice and floral notes. There is good volume and solid mid-palate density to the seductively delicious big-bodied flavors that are shaped by a phenolically mature tannic spine, all wrapped in a mildly rustic but highly persistent mineral-inflected finish. Note well that this muscular and robust effort is definitely going to need at least 7 to 8 years of keeping and require 15+, perhaps even slightly more.

Jancis Robinson (17)Cask sample. Mid cherry red. Stunning red-fruited perfume here. Floral and fruity in the extreme. Fine and finely chewy tannins, scented on the palate, with the dry character that it is hard to get in combination with this scentedness outside of the Côte d’Or. Pure, pretty but with depth as well. Long and moreish with the freshness to balance.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)An attractive mid crimson colour. A fine fresh bouquet, elegant fruit, not too demonstrative, but with a graceful detailed red fruit, alpine strawberry and little raspberry notes. Very nicely put together, all about the fruit more than the structure. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023.

Vinous (89-91)The 2019 Bourgogne Pressonnier is cohesive on the nose of blackberry, boysenberry jam and light violet aromas unfurling with time. Silky-smooth on the entry (you might well mistake this for a Vosne-Romanée), building nicely in the mouth and showing good salinity on the finish.

Vinous (90-92)The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys offers mostly red berry fruit on the nose, which is maybe just a little smudged compared to Roty’s other Village Crus at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh entry and a fine bead of acidity. The precise, chalky-textured finish compensates for the aromatics. I am sure the nose will gain more clarity during the remainder of élevage.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)A vibrant crimson and ruby colour. There is more intensity of fruit on the nose than detail. A fractional reduction too. Very intense lifted red fruit up front, gentler behind where the nuances start to come out. Built on balanced acidity rather than tannins. Quite long.
