Vinous (93-96)Good bright, deep red. Aromas of black raspberry, rose petal and menthol show an almost liqueur-like ripeness. Then wonderfully sappy and vinous in the mouth, with a powerful crushed stone element giving punch to the creamy mid-palate. This is in the style of Potel's Lavaux Saint-Jaques, offering outstanding precision and class and a powerful impression of energy. Can't quite match the Chambertin for sheer grip but this wine is like a wake-up call to the taste buds. (The Griottes-Chambertin, which finished its malo later, was quite youthfully clenched and oaky, and impossible to assess with confidence.) |

Vinous (92-94)Good deep red-ruby. Mocha, spices and earth on the nose, with suggestions of very ripe fruit; lower-toned than the Clos Saint-Denis. Round, layered and broad in the mouth, showing impressive volume leavened by a strong cardamom spiciness. Can't match the Clos Saint-Denis today for lift but this sexy wine is still a baby. Tannins are thoroughly buffered by mid-palate stuffing. |

Jancis Robinson (17.5)Barrel sample. Mid cherry red. Intense aroma of perfectly ripe and generous cherry and damson fruit. Smells of luxury. Tastes luxurious, too. Fills the mouth with perfectly ripe dark fruit, lightly peppery, a hint of chocolate from the oak. Deep, smooth, the epitome of luxury and still keeping its shape and freshness. |

Jancis Robinson (18)Barrel sample. Greyish deep crimson. Like the Échezeaux, this smells of luxury but here it is darker and a little more oaky on the nose, very dark fruit profile. On the palate, dark, dense and savoury, a little charry, peppery, spiced, but the tannins are unexpectedly fine and supple even if the oak has thickened them slightly. Long, savoury aftertaste. Needs a lot of time. |

Burghound (91-94)(Outstanding) Like the Amoureuses this is highly restrained and also requires considerable swirling to coax the otherwise superbly fresh and spicy aromas of various wild red berries, anise, sandalwood, clove and pekoe tea nuances. Out of all of the 1ers in the range this is easily the biggest and most muscular; indeed this possesses grand cru size and weight, all wrapped in an intensely mineral-driven and explosively long finish. Note that here too this is not going to make for a good early drinker as ample patience will be required. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Rouges 1er Cru is nicely focused on the elegant, pure nose, which features perfumed black cherries, raspberry and incense aromas - quintessential Vosne-Romanée aromatics. The palate is well balanced with a silky entry, fine weight in the mouth and a succulent, high-toned but not excessive finish. The opulence is pitched just right. Superb. This benefits from being located at high altitude in a warm growing season. |

Vinous (86-88)The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes comes from vines up to 85 years old. It has a sensual bouquet of brambly red fruit, undergrowth and light truffle aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, moderate acidity and decent length. What is missing is a little tension and precision on the finish compared to other vintages. |

Vinous (87-89)The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes has a clean and pure bouquet with perfumed raspberry and wild strawberry scents, a subtle earthiness underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, gentle grip with a nicely structured, Morey-like finish. Fine. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Vergelesses 1er Cru has a sophisticated nose of blackberry, loamy damp soil, raspberry and light cracked black pepper aromas that build nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a crisp bead of acidity; very harmonious. White pepper and clove appear toward a finish that leaves the tongue tingling after it has departed. Superb. |

Distinguished by its elegance, the Stephane Magnien Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2017 exemplifies the quintessence of Burgundian winemaking. Crafted in the esteemed Clos Saint-Denis vineyard, a classified Grand Cru in Burgundy's Morey-Saint-Denis region, this laudable libation is the handiwork of Stephane Magnien - fourth-generation vigneron in this family-run winery. Harvested by hand, the grapes following traditional vinification are matured in oak barrels, yielding a splendidly nuanced Pinot Noir. With pronounced aromas of wild berries punctuated by earthy undertones, its complexity on the palate is equally striking. Bursting with ripe red fruit and layered with notes of spice, its graceful tannins lead to an enduring finish. The Stephane Magnien Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2017 is a prime example of Stephane Magnien’s commitment and respect for the terroir, expressing the sublime characteristics of this esteemed vineyard. A stellar selection for discerning connoisseurs! |

Vinous (91-93)(these 18-year-old vines are planted to three clones): The most reduced of these 2014s on the nose, but still with captivating scents of black raspberry, licorice and pungent crushed-rock minerality. Delivers a wonderfully silky texture enlivened by harmonious acidity. One senses a strong rocky element and yet the wine shows no edges. This seamless wine boasts a long, rising finish featuring a hint of dark chocolate and noble tannins. A beauty, and clearly a bottling to follow as the vines continue to mature. |

Vinous (90)The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Village has an exquisite, pure red cherry and wild strawberry scented bouquet. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin, slightly confit in style, hints of blood orange and vanilla towards the enticing finish. Excellent, but very seductive. Tasted at the Domaine. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Village, raised in around 25% new oak, has a very intense bouquet of black cherries and light iodine aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit tinged with graphite, leading to a precise finish that does not outstay its welcome. Very fine, but it will require three or four years in bottle. |

Vinous (91)The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Village offers slightly meaty red fruit comingling with scorched earth and tobacco. The palate is marked by fine-grain tannins, but this is very fresh with orange rind decorating its surprisingly structured on the finish. Very fine. |

Vinous (88-90)The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Village, the usual five parcels from four climats, was showing just a light reduction on the nose that made it difficult to read. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, nicely structured (almost Morey-like) with white pepper and sous-bois towards the finish. Not bad, though it needs just a little more clarity. |

Decanter (95)The Marsannay Clos du Roy from Pataille is consistently among the top wines of the northern Côte de Nuits. The 2022 features soulful, super-ripe cassis and bramble fruit aromas with a savoury, smoky edge. The texture is dense and concentrated, with abundant tannin and enough freshness to drive this to an impressively long finish. The grapes are from Pataille's parcel of more than two hectares of mature vines planted in this south-east facing site's limestone pebbles and clay soil. It is slightly closed at present, but it should open in three to five years and drink well for at least another 20 years after that. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2019 Marsannay Les Longeroies comes from the middle of the vineyard on clayey soils. It is quite high-toned on the nose with Morello cherry, crushed strawberry and sea cave aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with very good depth, rather spicy with a liberal sprinkling of cracked black pepper on the vivacious finish. There is good persistency here - this is a superb Marsannay. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2022 Marsannay Les Longeroies offers open red cherry and raspberry coulis scents on the nose—one of the most generous at the moment amongst Pataille's 2022s. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, slightly flinty red fruit and fine delineation, finishing with impressive focus. Plenty of energy coiled up in this Marsannay. Excellent. |

Burghound (89-92)(from Les Duresses and Grands Champs). Slightly more elegant aromas include those of poached plum, cassis and newly turned earth. The seductive yet dense and powerful bigger-bodied flavors brim with dry extract that helps to buffer the firm tannic spine shaping the solidly persistent finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This moderately rustic effort should reward a decade of improvement and last for twice that. (89-92)/2028+ |

Vinous (89-91)The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village, matured in around 25% new oak, has quite a perfumed bouquet with red cherries and rose petal scents, quite airy and nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, slightly creamy in texture, gaining weight towards the finish that feels quite caressing. |

Wine Advocate (93-95)The 2015 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has an expressive bouquet with redcurrant, raspberry coulis, a touch of honey and a hint of Seville orange marmalade. It opens nicely in the glass, though does not slip into fifth gear at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, cohesive in the mouth and quite saline and spicy. There is generosity here, a trait of Charmes-Chambertin, with the mineral core surfacing right at the finish as it fans out. This is an impressive follow-up to the superb 2014 and it should give 20+ years of pleasure. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)Rich, exuberant purple. A cheerful nose, flamboyantly perfumed which is as Charmes should be. I very much like the balance of this, which is all in red fruit, succulent strawberry and raspberry, good acidity, no feeling of excess heat. 14.1% but holds it without difficulty. Tasted: December 2021 |

Vinous (93-95)The 2020 Corton-Rognet Grand Cru has a very well-delineated bouquet, very terroir-driven, crushed stone infusing the red fruit a touch of white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh acidity, taut and crisp, gently building towards quite a complex finish with touches of Early Grey infusing the red fruit, cracked black pepper on the aftertaste. Excellent. |

Tim Atkin MW (94)Like the domaine's La Combe d'Orveau, this Premier Cru sits high on a slope above Grand Crus. The vines averaged 44 years old for the 2020 vintage, with the larger part planted in 1974 and the smaller bit planted in 1986. The focused, pure nose smells of blackberry coulis and fresh flowers. The palate bustles with freshness and energy as the finely-hewn tannins frame the medium body. 2024-35 |

Vinous (89-91)The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has a very attractive, quite floral bouquet, understated but opening with lovely red berry fruit and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite structured with a Morey-like personality on the finish. This is quite stylish and should age well in bottle. |

Vinous (95-97)The 2019 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru has a little more intensity than the Charmes-Chambertin, damp undergrowth, moss, light leafy aromas tincturing the mainly red fruit and developing more and more earthiness with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Taut and fresh with perhaps the most saline finish of all Romain Taupenot’s cuvées this year, it is destined to be a wonderful Mazoyères-Chambertin for sure. Best in show chez Taupenot-Merme. |
