Les Vaucrains was hit twice by hail in 2018 - in a year when even a single storm was rare - which reduced yields in the vineyard. This can be a little austere in most vintages - the bony soils sit right on the bedrock (hence its name, meaning 'worth nothing') - but is way less so here. Sweet wild berry and strawberry jam flavours are underpinned by sinewy tannins and supporting acidity.د.إ1,935.00 -

A more deeply pitched and markedly earthier nose reveals notes of both red and dark currant along with a hint of the sauvage. The rich, velvety and caressing medium weight flavors are almost easy-going and delicate on the delicious and lightly structured finale. The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru comes from 1.47 hectares that cover the four soil types within the vineyard; Magnien informed me that he is the only grower who has all four. The vines are Pinot Magnien and some are up to 100 years old. A gorgeous bouquet of pure black cherries, blueberry and light violet aromas bursts from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and lightly spiced, leading into a harmonious, persistent, mineral-driven finish. This should evolve into a gorgeous Les Cazetiers.د.إ1,935.00 -

An even crimson ruby colour. The fruit is more immediate than the Ruchottes. This is seamless across the palate and leaves a gorgeously balanced feeling of little red fruits at the finish, entirely covering the tannins, which in any case are refined. There is a little minerality too as befits Cazetiers. Really a lovely stylish finale.د - د

(from a .33 ha holding of ~55-year-old vines). A cooler and airier nose combines notes of red and dark currant with those of spice, earth and a whiff of game. The markedly more finely textured flavors exude an almost pungent minerality on the impressively persistent and beautifully well-balanced finale. (from a .33 ha holding of ~55-year-old vines). Once again, the wood treatment is discreet but not invisible on the ripe and very fresh aromas of poached plum, cassis and pretty floral wisps. The racy, detailed and intense middle weight flavors possess a more sophisticated mouthfeel thanks to the fine-grained tannins, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, balanced and impressively long finale. Then it kicks on really very well on the palate, a lacy touch, silky across the refined tannins and with a long graceful finish. Very good. A depth of ruby purple. This is tenser and more backward, with more prominent tannins and good acidity. The fruit has a slightly darker raspberry feel to it. This will need significantly longer. The wood tannins are a little fresh. If you want a wine to drink a little earlier, then the straight Gevrey-Chambertin would be the choice. Drink from 2029-2034. Tasted Nov 2024.د - د

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin La Perrière 1er Cru contains 50% whole bunch and is matured in 30% new oak (Billon and Chassin cooperages). The very cohesive bouquet features brambly red berry fruit, briar, black tea and undergrowth scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a peppery entry, fine acidity and a Morey-like structure toward the finish. While not amazingly long, it is very nicely focused and exudes breeding.د.إ1,830.00 -

The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru is another cuvée that includes 100% whole bunch this year. It has a well-defined bouquet, the stemmy element not quite as pronounced as on the Gevrey Champonnet and more integrated with the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, and generous peppery black fruit laced with cedar and white pepper. The grippy finish needs time to abrade its edges. A traditionally cut Morey-Saint-Denis that needs to be consumed with food. Good potential here.د.إ1,495.00 -

The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru comes from vines over 70 years old and was cropped at 45hl/ha, the first vineyard to be picked in order to moderate alcohol. Containing 100% whole bunch, it has an intense bouquet of pine-needle-infused red and black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, and a little tarry toward the finish.
