Sensationally complex aromatics of red and black currants, scorched earth, cold fireplace, smoke, tobacco, and subtle iron notes all define the bouquet. This carries to a full-bodied, deep, rich, incredibly powerful Haut-Brion that has building tannins, a seamless, layered mouthfeel, and a great finish. If I had to pick one wine to describe perfection in wine, this might be it. The 2010 is 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, which came in at 14.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.83. Drink 2025-2100. |

Cut herbs, liquorice, fennel, cassis, bilberry, loganberry, cigar box, incense. More closed than the 2009, as you would expect, but this is right up there with the greatest wines of the vintage, and one that you will be able to pick out of a cellar in 30 years time without the slightest worry. Brilliant. 100% new oak for ageing, from their own DBR Lafite cooperage. And once again, having this wine among the rest of the lineup during a comparative tasting is so instructive in terms of understanding the extra depths that you get from Lafite. |

It is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44.5% Merlot and .5% Cabernet Franc. An amazingly opulent, round, delicious wine, and a great buy when they finally release it – assuming it comes in under a three-digit price – it possesses wonderfully silky tannins, classic black currant, cedar wood and forest floor notes, and rich, full-bodied opulence as well as a terrific purity and palate presence. It should drink well for 10-15+ years. |

But you are going to want to be around when it fully opens. |

This deep purple-hued beauty boasts phenomenal notes of crème de cassis, smoky tobacco, graphite, and leather. With full-bodied richness, a deep, layered mouthfeel, and ripe, polished tannins, it brings that rare mix of opulence and elegance and is an utter joy to drink. It needs a healthy decant if drinking any time soon and has another 3-4 decades of overall longevity. Drink 2025-2065. |

Wine Advocate (97)2010 was a very dry vintage of exceptional quality, producing incredibly structured and complex wines that are a little formidable when young but should age incredibly. Deep garnet-purple colored, the nose of the 2010 Les Forts de Latour is broody with subtle notes of licorice, tar, crushed black berries and plums with hints of spice cake and hoisin. Full-bodied, firm and grainy with an impenetrable core of muscular fruit, it finishes with fantastic persistence. Give it 5-7 years at least, and then it may well outlive the 1970 Les Forts that I recently tasted with Latour's CEO, Frédéric Engerer! |
