Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Burghound (94)Sweet spot Outstanding. This is at once the spiciest and the most floral-suffused nose in the range with its ripe yet ultra-fresh nose of various dark berries, anise and newly turned earth scents. The mouthfeel is also intriguing as it combines excellent density with an appealing sleekness that carries over to the mineral-driven, powerful and compact finale that is wonderfully persistent if very clearly built-to-age. This is almost always Pavelot's best wine and it is highly likely to be so in 2022 as well. |

Wine Advocate (95)The 2022 Santenay 1er Cru Gravières Rouge has turned out beautifully, unwinding in the glass with notes of dark berries, sweet spices, baking chocolate and violets. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's deep and multidimensional, its perfumed core of fruit underpinned by an elegantly muscular chassis of sweet, powdery tannins. It's produced from a handful of parcels in Les Gravières, including both old vines and also younger plantings at high density with superior Pinot Noir genetics, farmed with high, unhedged canopies and soil work performed by small caterpillar-tracked engines. This is the most structured wine in the range and will richly reward at least five years' patience. |
