Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

The 2022 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières has turned out brilliantly, offering up notes of orange zest, wet stones, white flowers, toasted hazelnuts and nutmeg. Medium- to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, with lovely mid-palate plenitude, it marries ethereal purity with mineral depth to compelling effect, concluding with a sapid, chalky finish.د.إ7,860.00 -

The 2022 Meursault Les Narvaux has turned out beautifully, underlining what a strong vintage this is for the white wines of the Côte de Beaune. Unwinding in the glass with notes of pear, hazelnuts, sweet citrus oil and white flowers, it's medium- to full-bodied, satiny and vibrant, with excellent texture and cut, concluding with a long, saline finish.د.إ4,025.00 -

In fact this is Grands Epenots, though not specified thus on the label. 5% comes from their own vines and is made as whole bunch, the rest is not. Deep and intense, with a profound dark raspberry fruit, fine intensity through the middle, then more fruit to cover any final tannins. Supple dark fruit with a touch of chocolate maybe. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: November 2023.د.إ1,775.00 -

Mid primrose, and the bouquet could use freshening up. Quite solid, showing the oak a little, including a touch of spice and sandalwood. Yet I do very much like the wine beneath, solid orchard fruit, medium acidity and fine length. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: November 2023.د.إ2,990.00 -

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes is a beauty, bursting from the glass with a youthfully expressive bouquet of pear, orange oil, toasted hazelnuts and white flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, with a fleshy attack that segues into a deep, layered mid-palate that's girdled by lively acids, it concludes with a long, expansive finish.د.إ7,745.00 -

From Ez Folatières, purchased as must. A lime streak runs through the mid yellow colour. This has notable density of bouquet without showing much detail yet. More substantial than the racy Pucelles, but retaining its own lively character behind the substantial flesh. Dense, generous, and with class. Drink from 2029-2038. Tasted: November 2023.د.إ7,010.00 -

From the lower part of Le Charlemagne. There is a regular cuvee too. Lively fresh primrose. At the moment the oak shows a little stronger than the wine on the first nose. The fruit is pretty substantial on the palate, starting at the front, then gracefully continues through to a stony and salty finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023.د.إ4,658.88 -

The 2022 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru was completely de-stemmed. The expressive nose mixes red and black fruit, melted tar and touches of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, lightly spiced with a brisk, black cherry and licorice-tinged finish. Perhaps this has more refinement than the Clos des Chênes.د.إ1,495.00
